 Ayurveda immunity during covid-19 PANDEMIC

- By Dr.P. Yadaiah

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus. Unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine to prevent this disease but Ayurveda can help prevent spreading this deadly virus by promoting healthy ways to strengthen your immune system following simple procedures and tips.

During Pandemics or Epidemics it is highly recommended in Ayurveda to undergo detoxification of the body and Rasayana treatments as per the dosha (three substances defined in human body as per Ayurveda - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and body conditions. Charaka Janapadoddhvamsaniyam Vimana: 3rd Chapter on Management of epidemics talks in detail about this.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19):

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Dry Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny Nose
  • Difficulty in breathing (Severe cases)

This disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with above symptoms.

GENERAL SAFETY PROTOCOLS:

Below are the general safety protocols and guidelines that should be followed to help prevent contamination and spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands regularly for atleast 20 seconds
  • Use soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue
  • Use flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze
  • Avoid close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell
  • Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean

AYURVEDA FOR IMMUNITY:

Apart from following above general preventive measures, we can leverage Ayurveda and Panchakarma to keep our immune system strong and resistance to this virus.

Kapha, one of the three dosha, governs the structure of the body. It is the principle that holds the cells together and forms the muscle, fat and bone. The primary function of Kapha is protection.

When Kapha is aggravated, Kapha diet and drugs are required to prevent and heal respiratory track infections by opening the channels of the body.

In Ayurveda, below few therapies help achieve this through preventive management, specially at home with minimum supervision -

1. Shodhana therapy (detoxification) for respiratory tract problems through Nasya karma

Nasya (Drug administration through nose / Errhine Therapy )

Nasya therapy is a process wherein the drug (herbalized oils and liquid medicines) is instilled into nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head and upper respiratory track, if it is performed systematically. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation (prana), which has a direct influence on the functioning of brain and upper respiratory track to detoxify excess Kapha dosha from body.

Pratimarsha Nasya is one of the easiest and safest type of Nasya that can be performed at home.

Pour 2-3 drops of sesame (Til) oil or ghee in both nostrils with index finger twice every day. This will control and prevent kapha diseases and respiratory infections.

2. Consumption ofRasayana drugs

Ayurveda works on two prespective of health care - Preventive and Curative. There are two groups of people with medical prespective - one diseased and other healthy individuals.

Rasayana therapy ensures smooth running of human body mechanism and promotes positive health to all individuals, popularly known as Rejuvenation therapy now-a-days.

Rasayana drugs like Pippali Rasayana is safe and easily available in the market. Pippali is a spice called - long pepper.

Boil 2-3 long pepper with milk and consume twice a day. This is safe to drink everyday which in turn would help improve immunity.

OTHER SIMPLE RECOMMENDATIONS:

Below are few other simple recommendations we have for you -

  • Avoid cold, sweet and fried food.

Drinking or eating cold foods reduce the digestion process and heavy and fried food are difficult to digest which is not great for your overall health.

  • Eat well cooked, fresh, warm and simple food in timely manner.

This stimulates digestive enzymes and improves circulation as well.

  • Drink warm water preferably with lemon everyday

This protects our body from immune system deficiency.

  • Add ginger, black pepper and garlic in generous amount to food or even add it to any beverage like milk or tea.

These ingredients have anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties which can take care of cold, flu and related infections.

  • It is highly recommended to give Swarna Bindu to children on Pushya Nakshatra day every month. Read more here.
